 Accessing Kidepo by Road from Kampala

The road distance from Kampala to Kidepo Valley National Park is approximately 700 km, and the journey takes around 8-10 hrs depending on the condition of the road. The journey from Kampala northward traverses the heartland and the north of Uganda and offers an engaging and visually rewarding travel experience that builds genuine anticipation for the wilderness destination ahead.

The trip is most easily made in a sturdy high-clearance 4WD, as the road quality worsens dramatically after Kitgum and is especially rough in the rainy season.

Departing Kampala at 6:00 AM is strongly recommended to ensure arrival at the park before nightfall and to allow adequate time for the final section of the journey on murram roads. 

Accessing Kidepo by Chartered Flight

For those travellers who are time-conscious and comfort-minded, a charter flight is the quickest and easiest way to get into Kidepo Valley National Park. Various reputable aviation companies like Aerolink Uganda and Eagle Air Uganda offer services for charter flights between Entebbe International Airport and the Lomej airstrip in Kidepo; the journey takes about two hours.

Charter flights provide stunning aerial views of northern Uganda on the approach to Kidepo, and the thrill of landing on a bush airstrip in the middle of the open savannah will immerse visitors right away in the wilderness to come.

Luggage restrictions on charter flights: travellers are usually allowed soft bags only with a maximum weight of 15 kgs; booking in advance is highly advised, especially during high season.

Accessing Kidepo via Gulu and Kitgum

The route from Gulu to Kitgum is the best-known and most-used road corridor to Kidepo Valley National Park. Travellers leaving Kampala for Gulu on the good Kampala-Gulu Road can expect to reach Gulu, the second largest city in Uganda, in about four hours of driving.

Gulu serves as a convenient and comfortable overnight stop for travellers wishing to break the journey before continuing northeast through Kitgum and onwards to the park.

From Kitgum, the road transitions from a tarmac to a murram surface as it approaches the park boundary. This final section requires careful driving, particularly during the rainy season, and a four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential throughout.

The Gulu-Kitgum road provides the best, by far, road conditions of the available overland routes and even shadows us out several times by towns where petrol and provisions can be purchased prior to entering the parks’ isolated surroundings.

Accessing Kidepo via Moroto and Karamoja

There is another, overland route from the south-east which leads to Kidepo Valley via Mbale and Moroto, which runs through the centre of the Karamoja sub-region. This route offers a deeply immersive introduction to Karamoja’s distinctive semi-arid landscape and provides opportunities to engage with the Karamojong cultural environment before arriving at the park.

Road conditions on the Moroto route are more variable than the Gulu-Kitgum alternative, and a high-clearance four-wheel-drive vehicle is essential throughout the entire journey.

Park Entry Fees and Requirements

All visitors to Kidepo Valley National Park on a Uganda safari are required to pay Uganda Wildlife Authority entry fees at the Apoka gate. Fee structures vary by visitor category; foreign non-residents, foreign residents, and East African citizens are subject to different rates.

The dry season months of June through August and December through March offer the most favourable conditions for accessing Kidepo Valley National Park. These are times when the roads are most predictable, the internal game tracks are passable, and wildlife viewing is at its best. The wet season months provide lush vegetation and excellent birdwatching but can make travel overland difficult.

Essential Tips for Accessing Kidepo

Having enough fuel is essential for overlanders, as there are very few dependable options for refuelling in the vicinity of the park.
